Calcium hydroxide is commonly used in the production of corn tortillas. Soaking corn dough (called masa) in this highly alkaline compound increases the bioavailability of niacin (vitamin B3) in the corn, helps bind the masa together, and makes the tortillas tastier and easier to digest. A similar process is used in making hominy grits.

Warning: Do not consume food grade calcium hydroxide straight. It is a strong alkaline compound and may be harmful.  Directions below.

Description

Our food-grade calcium hydroxide is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula Ca(OH)2. It has many common names, including hydrated lime, slack lime, pickling lime, and cal in Spanish.

Calcium hydroxide is also frequently used in the pickling process to cure and crisp cucumbers, ensuring the best pickles ever! In home brewing, it’s used as an acidity/pH adjustment tool. It is the most common ingredient in antacids, and it’s even useful as an insecticide—its touch kills most crawling insects, including ticks, fleas, beetles, and grubs.
